| MARTIN LUTHER KING MIDDLE
SCHOOL is committed to practicing and teaching the ideals of Dr. King
to insure that every student will be valued as an individual and as a contributing
member of a nurturing and equitable learning community. These ideals are
Equality, Academic Excellence, Community Action, Respect for Self and Others,
Nonviolence, and Leadership based on Democratic Principles.
Equality is the foundation
for the school's commitment to educate all students, based on the belief
that every child has both the ability and the right to be successful in
school. Students, parents, staff and the community must work together as
a team to create an environment in which all students are encouraged and
supported to realize their full potential.
Academic Excellence
is achieved as all students are given a common, comprehensive, academically
oriented core curriculum with ongoing practice in critical and creative
thinking, problem solving, collaboration, skill building and decision making.
Community Action recognizes
that educating children is a team effort, and the participation and support
of parents and community members are critical to a school's success. As
they participate in the life of the school, they understand the needs of
both the institution and the students.
Likewise, students must be
given opportunities to connect with real world learning, extending their
learning beyond the classroom walls. Students must develop awareness of
the relationship between their present studies and their future academic
options and potential career choices.
Respect for Self
and Others creates a climate in which learning and social and
emotional growth flourish. Students develop self-respect as they
identify their academic, social, and emotional strengths and needs, envision
their success. and acquire the tools necessary to realize their ambitions.
Nonviolence is a theme
supported by classroom learning and extracurricular offerings at King.
The school is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for
learning, in which rules are clear and consistent. Students are given opportunities
to appreciate their similarities and differences in a variety of social
and recreational settings. and to learn how to resolve conflicts peacefully,
using mediation and compromise.
Leadership based on Democratic
Principles is achieved as students are encouraged to be active in the
life of the school and learn that their voice is valued. Students are prepared,
both in and out of the classroom, to become responsible and participating
members of our democracy. Both staff and students participate in a collaborative
model of collective, informed decision making. |
